Pretoria Weavers Guild
It warms my heart to think that in this modern age, when people send job applications in sms-speak, amusing apps make teenagers billionaires, and we’re on the verge of colonizing other planets, there are still those with the patience to practice a few ancient crafts.
I’m naturally drawn to weaving because of it’s relationship to fashion and bespoke tailoring specifically. And really loved attending the opening of this stunning exhibition. I encourage EVERYONE to pop down to the Pretoria Art Museum and take a wonder through some incredibly complex works of art.
The Pretoria Weavers Guild was started 1951 by Susan Retief and Elsabe Saeur with the aim of promoting the crafts of spinning and weaving. Weaving to Inspire is intended as a showcase of some excellent work produced by the guild members.
I invite you to look closely at the images included here, and realize that every inch was made with painstaking patience and dexterity by a human hand. In our modern world we look down on the manual laborer, but forget that these rare skills can be wonderful professions for those who master them.
The exhibition runs until Sunday 27 March, and hosts a few workshops throughout (details below)
